Just A Happy Mix!

Hello again dear friends and I hope you're all having good times and enjoying some crafting fun in among all the other calls on your time.

This past week or so has seen me begin a couple of new projects which will quite possibly be works in progress for some time yet, but then, it's nice to have a couple of things to fall back on now and then when the creative nectar is not quite up to scratch and it seems difficult to decide what to do next!

Do you have such times? I certainly do and, although it doesn't happen very often, when it does it hits with a bang and for me it's a good thing to have something waiting in the background, something that can be picked up and put down when needs must!

Before I show you those items I really want to let you see what I finally did with the cute tea towel that the lovely Robin so kindly sent me some weeks ago. I've been pondering regarding the best use for this lovely cloth, and I certainly didn't want to dry dishes with it - such a shame that would have been - so it finally dawned on me (yes, I wonder sometimes where my brain has been hiding!) that it was ideal to make another of the fabric baskets I've been making up lately, but this one's for me whereas the previous ones are intended for gifts.

I included a wee pocket in this one for hook or scissors or whatever, and every time I look at the lining it's good to be reminded about kindness, loving and caring!

Okay, let's take a look at the ongoing works ….

Since I recently put the final touches to the 'round the colour wheel' blanket, I've been aware that I have a stash of leftover yarn - namely Stylecraft Special DK - that I can now have fun with. When I bought this lovely big load back in May of last year I was so excited about all the wonderful colours and have really loved the way it works up, especially as I had had no desire before this experience to use acrylic yarn of any description!

Anyway, I digress; it was time to begin a new blanket and the V-stitch had caught my attention but, such a job I had getting the look I wanted. Anyway, I finally realised that instead of working into the actual stitches from the previous row, I needed to work between the two stitches in each 'set' …. have I explained that properly? Anyway, I think you can see in the pics what I'm trying to say. I'm really enjoying the way this is working up and hope I have enough yarn to make a nice size blanket. I've had the kitchen scales out and weighed it all up, and as long as all the colours continue to go well together it should be okay, and I'm loving how they're mingling so far! What do you think?

The other ongoing project is a baby coverlet. I saw a similar thing in the Australian Homespun magazine and rather fancied having a go so why not …

I like that there's a bit of machine stitching, hand sewing, and crochet involved here - ah yes, variety is the spice of life and I've said it so many times, sorry!

This is a reversible coverlet consisting of squares of fabric cut to six-and-a-half inches each and each pair stitched together in quarter-inch seams. Then they're turned out the right way, blanket stitched around, followed by a crochet edge worked into the blanket stitch. No wadding is involved in this so it should be a nice lightweight coverlet  when all those squares are pieced together. I've started off with six squares but will need to do a few more; I don't intend for this to be big big though, just enough to fit a pram or cot!

This morning on our walk we spied a wee drift of snowflakes - not the real snowdrops - and a few jonquils close to the river so the phone camera was put to good use again ….

…. and in the garden this week, well, our first daffodil of the season opened up to smile on us, and the jasmine buds from last week have begun to reveal their fragile little faces too …. signs of Spring in the midst of winter! Lavender too of course, as well as daisies and wallflowers - I think?

Thanks so much for visiting once again, and for your messages that always warm my heart and bring happy smiles. Have a wonderful week whatever you do!

With my love,

Joy xoxo

  1. I love your fabric basket and also the new rug you are crocheting. The baby rug is ineteresting, though I'm a little confused at how it is working. Can't believe how much you have out already in the garden. I've only a few lonely snowflakes as yet, though I've put all the bulbs in since we moved in this year. Take care.

    1. Thank you Susan, and maybe next post I'll manage to give a clearer view of the baby cover's progress - basically I now just need to crochet the (double-sided) squares together. I do hope your bulbs do well for you - once they first show their foliage the growth seem to be very quick … xoJ

  4. I find myself always wanting to scroll to the garden photos at the end, don't ever stop posting them will you, I love them and today you did not disappoint. daffodils?? In the Northern hemisphere we are about as far away time-wise from a daffoldil that we can be so I was really thrilled. I love that stitch on the blanket and I have some stylecraft (quite a bit) from my crochet classes and because I am being kind to myself at the moment I have knocked crochet classes on the head until I have found out what working 4 days a week with a 2 children is like. maybe I will get back to it next year - never say never, but I don't want too many time pressures. You have inspired me to weigh it and dig out a pattern. Always good to catch up with your news. Jo x

  8. You've been so busy, Joy! Everything you've made is beautiful. It was so clever to use the towel in one of your baskets. Now you can enjoy it all the time, not just for the dishes. And the blanket is coming along beautifully; I've been wanting to try that V-stitch pattern lately too but I'm afraid I've been overthinking the pattern, making it seem harder than it is. I'll have to give it a try soon. I hope you have a great weekend. :)

Seriously it's spooky sometimes. :-) mind you I haven't made one yet but I have been researching what and how, something is cooking in my head. And I have just picked up a sweet tablecloth recently in the op shop and was admiring its crochet edging and thinking how nice it would look on little quilts!!! No stop please you are giving me goosebumps! There is where it stops a little because it's been arctic here and I have not seen a spring flower that is game to open up around here yet. 18. That was a lovely way to use your tea towel. I love your crocheted blanket. Normally I use natural fibres like wool, cotton, linen etc. but I have to admit that the Stylecraft special acrylic is very good, especially for blankets. I've just finished one and will be putting it on my blog soon. We're heading into Autumn now. It's still summer but you can see the days shortening and the weather is cooling a bit.

I need to think about making a baby blanket and that would be a great way to make it nice and colorful. So pretty. Speaking of baby blankets, what a sweet little blanket you are making. Stitching and crochet all in one. I bet that would be great in a light weight flannel fabric also. I can't wait to see it finished. Finally, I forget that you are in winter right now. I love your fabric basket, that's a fab tea-towel! The blanket is gorgeous, such a lovely combination of colours. I'm sure I made a V-stitch baby blanket, but I'm positive I couldn't remember how if I tried.

There was a sew-along/crochet-along for the baby coverlet a couple of years ago, they called it a Fusion blanket. i've had it on my list ever since but still haven't got round to making one!

I really love the bag, what a great idea for the use of a pretty tea towel and one that will undoubtedly last a little longer and give a little more pleasure. I also love the sweet lining fabric with the lovely words, it really is a very special bag. Now on to your crochet, well, may I say that I think I am going to have to try out this V stitch. I have seen this before and even though it has grabbed my eye it clearly hasn't stayed, but now that I have seen your beautiful work, I am so keen to make a little lap blanket or something, after all winter will soon be here. I suppose just like you are seeing gorgeous daffs coming through, always such a lovely sight after the winter months and you know that spring will soon spring. Aren't we blessed to experience the joys of the different seasons. Now on to your little baby coverlet, I really love this Joy it is so very pretty and love the crochet edging, a very pretty one indeed. Did you get the pattern for this from a book or is made up? Well done on so many beautiful creations, you should be so proud. It is so lovely to catch up. Love this bag, but I have to say that the June, tree cushion is my very favorite. I am a new quilter and a want to be crocheter. I have made ripple pattern blankets and simple straight crochet work, but really want to learn to do a granny square. My Mom taught me about 40 years ago, but I didn't keep it up and now when I try they do not lay flat or look pretty. I need to make it my goal to have someone sit down with me and show me, like Mom did. That is how I learn best. Your blog is so fresh and pretty and I love your close up flower photography. 42. Sweet Joy, how I enjoy reading your posts! I see you've been up to some very lovely projects (as usual!), and your garden never ceases to amaze me! I hope all is well and you're enjoying your start of spring. I've haven't been around for awhile and I've missed visiting you. Sending lots of hugs your way. xoxo

  44. Joy I have a rookie question. Your beautiful hexagon throw using the simulated braid join. The 1st step is done as an flat braid . Is this done on all hexagons and every side. Then go to step 3.
Or, is one side left undone and then done to attach. I know it was in 2013 but I am in love with it. And have a bag of African flower hexagons just waiting to be attached. I would appreciate any help I could get. Thanks
