Giveaway Winner, Finished Projects, and Fun Things!

Hello everyone, and Happy Mother's Day to those of you who celebrate this event today - here in Australia we set aside a Sunday in May when we honour our Mums - I don't know why it can't be universal!

Crocheted mandalas seem to be all the rage at the moment and for me, despite having been attracted to Wink's lovely work when she first started her weekly mandalas on her blog at A Creative Being, the desire to make them didn't really grab me - perhaps because in a previous life I had painted watercolour mandalas and had already worked them out of my system. However, having seen a few of you lovely ladies getting into them now I decided a week or so ago to finally give them a go, following one of Wink's beautiful patterns. It's been fun comparing the various effects obtained just by changing colours, or using the same or similar colours in a different order, in a similar fashion to working blocks (in sewing as well as crochet), and I've completed two of Wink's 'Picot Mandala' pattern, this one is from Issue 7 of Simply Crochet.

A closer look - why not - may as well . . .

I am almost finished working a third mandala, from Issue 5 this time, and I think Wink has entitled it her 'Heart Mandala' - but I'll show it another time when it's finished! By the way, if you should think the stitches in the above pics are looking a bit 'different', it's probably because I am left handed!

I think we can gain a lot from mandalas, not least learning about colour mixing and of course most of us would have heard of, and hopefully seen, at least, pictures of the beautiful works the Monks do in coloured sand of these wonderfully meditative projects. For me, often once I've proved to myself that I can do something I then go on to other subject matter, and such is the case here - perhaps that's something to do with growing older and racing against time because there are so many things I want to do . . . . .

such as finishing my latest quilt . . . . .

It measures 50" x 64' and would look good on a single size bed, I think! Here it is laid out on my Queen size,  just to give you an idea of how it looks . . . . I'm very happy it's all done - it worked out to be a fair bit bigger than my previous two and so the handling of it while stitching was a bit tricky at times, but all good experience! Now I have a need to work on smaller projects for a wee while!

Here is an idea from the book 'Hoop-la' by Kirsty Neale:

Following suggestions from Kirsty, I wrapped washi tape around the hoop, appliquéd the little fabric bunny  onto another scrap of fabric stash, and embroidered a few little flowers etc.. The fun bit is the little glued-on pom-pom tail - thanks to my Mum for teaching me how, all those years ago! I still need to do a round of running stitches around the back to draw in the (temporarily folded under) fabric, and also tie on a ribbon of some description to disguise the little screw/hook thingy on the top. That eye is a little white button sewn on and then a piece of black felt glued on top!

Now I would like to thank you all so much for your beautiful comments on my previous post in celebration of my first blog birthday - you say such lovely things to me and I very much appreciate every word, thank you!

As planned the name was drawn from the 'hat' - which was actually a bowl - and the lovely fellow blogger who's name came up is Julie from 'Haggiz' blog ! Congratulations to you Julie,  and will you please send me an email/message with your mailing particulars and I'll parcel up and send off your new table runner to you:     joyandjeff@wn.com.au

I will be away for a few days from the middle of next week, during which time I may fall way behind in following your lovely posts - I will miss you all but may manage to pop in now and then for a quick look, depending on what happens. Hubby and I are looking forward to catching up with family and friends and having a nice little break while family and friends here at home will 'mind the fort' while we're gone!

But before I finish this post there are a couple more pics I want to share - first our little furry friend 'Pika' and then this gorgeous plant belonging to friends who are on holiday and entrusted it to our care until their return - isn't it beautiful!

Wishing you all happy days, with my love,

Joy xo

  2. Hi Joy. Like you I'd not seen much point in a Mandela, but tried one the other week. I want to do more, but no idea what to do with them, I suppose I will find something. Congratulations on finishing your quilt and that rabbit is adorable. I like the way the ear flops down. What good friends to give you the best of their plant.

    1. Hi S, it was the floppy ear that attracted me to the little rabbit . . . . you could sew a mandala onto a cushion front … that sort of thing? Lovely to hear from you again, thank you! Joy xo

  3. Where to start Joy as always your work is lovely. I haven't been tempted to make a mandala either as yet bit it is on my to do list. I love yours they are really beautiful, do you plan to use them as wall hanging's because that's what I would do with mine. Your quilt is lovely a real heirloom and will be treasured for ever. I can relate to the passing of time and wanting to do so much, why does life get in the way of our crafting and the dreaded housework haha. Pika is so cute and the plant is lovely! Happy mothers day Joy and have a lovely time on your break. xxx

  4. Congratulations to Julie! Your latest finished quilt is beautiful Joy. I love the shot of it hanging up. You've been so busy crafting again. The little rabbit is adorable, and a nice touch for Easter. I like the mandalas, and the idea of sewing them to a cushion cover sounds perfect. I have a Christmas cactus the same as your friend's. Mine has been blooming since before Christmas! I hope you enjoy your break with your husband. Have a great weekend. Wendy x

I was so happy to have the quilt finished for I did have a couple of wee problems with it on the way . . . . that's life isn't it, but no stress this time, I just did the best I could! These blooms are quite exceptional aren't they - our friends loaned it to us the previous year also! Many thanks for your sweet message, talk soon! Joy xo

  5. Hi Joy, A very happy Mother's Day to you! I so enjoy reading your posts and I find I just want them to go on and on. I'm always disappointed when I see the end of the post is nearing. Your mandalas are so pretty! I've never made one myself but I'm tempted to give it a go after seeing how lovely yours turned out. Such a cute project to do using little snips of various colors...and we all have those! You quilt turned out just beautiful!!! Oh, I just love it! The little swinging girl stitchery in the center is darling. Congratulations to Julie on winning that gorgeous table runner. I'm sure she the envy of all who'll visit here today! :) ... I forgot to say how cute your little bunny is and what a great idea it was to cover the hoop with washi tape! Pika is just as cute as can be, so white and fluffy, he looks like a little snow puff! After enjoying the pictures of your beautiful summer garden, I know your friends picked the right couple to look after their lovely cactus plant!
You amaze me with all the projects you get done, Joy. I feel as though I'm just stumbling along right now with just little bits of fun time here and there. I really need to change things up somehow! Enjoy your week away sweet girl...take pictures so we can all see when you get back. Lots of hugs to you, xoxo Paulette

The mandalas are a nice thing to work on and any nice doily type pattern done in a variety of colours would be great - or coasters made a bit bigger maybe . . . have a go! Ah, I have lots of time for crafting, Paulette, so can concentrate on zipping through one project after another - you have other calls on your time that are so important but I do hope you can arrange things to allow yourself a bit more fun - you need that, and deserve it, I'm sure of that! I really appreciate your kind thoughts my friend, and yes, I'll try to take lots of pics to share! With love, Joy xoxo

  15. Joy, as usual your blog posts resonate with gentle happiness. The quilt is darling and the crochet so pretty. I am curious as to the reference to a previous life and mandalas ? There is a young Buddhist monk who boards with the priest I work for. His work with butter and the sand mandalas are breathtaking, and a puff of wind and they are gone. Luckily our quilts and crochet will stay a little longer. Enjoy the break.

    1. Thanks so much Susan - I was thinking of you when I came across a couple of little bits during the quilting that didn't quite 'measure up' to my expectations . . . and was kind to myself and carried on regardless - remembering your good advices - so I thank you for that! The reference to a previous life was not as intriguing as it may have sounded - many many years ago I was into water-colour painting!
Isn't it sad to see all that beauty go so quickly after so much concentration and talent: the monks visit our little town and work their mandalas then afterwards gather up the sand into a bottle and go scatter it - still beautiful though! Yeah, let's preserve our craft work, but then, I do also get the message about not being too precious or possessive about 'things'! So many lessons in life! So, you've got me thinking again my friend, thank you! Warm thoughts, Joy xo

  20. Your stitching and crocheting is always so neat and even - I think your calm gentle spirit shows through to your work. I hope you have a lovely time away. At church yesterday was called mothering Sunday and it started in the 16th century commemorating the children in service who would be allowed to go home on the 4th Sunday in Lent. They would pick flowers on the way home and their mothers would bake simnel cake. We each got a little bouquet and a piece of simnel cake. I love those old traditions, and the next one I love is mothers day which is fast approaching....

  21. Oh sorry I meant to say May day!

  22. Thank you so much for your kindness! It's very interesting to hear the meaning and tradition behind Mothering Sunday - I had heard of the simnel cake being baked but not really the rest the story - how lovely that you were given flowers and cake at church. My younger daughter was born on May day so it's always a special day for us anyway! Joy x

  23. I know that the UK Mothering Sunday was put in place a long time ago. It was the one day a year that girls in service got to go and visit their mothers. I wonder if your Mother's Day was put in place a long time ago too?
Love the mandalas, they are so pretty. So do you crochet left handed? I'm left handed, very left handed, but it was easier to learn to crochet right handed and I can't see it making much difference.
Beautiful quilt top too, and I love that hoop. I made the same bunny but forgot to make his ear 3d!
