A Mixed Bag

Hello my friends - thank you for being here and for your lovely messages which are always such a pleasure to receive and so encouraging for me! It's been so nice catching up with all your posts too, and enjoying your creativity, although I have been a bit late now and then!

Everytime I get around to posting I think there isn't much to show you but then am usually surprised once the pics start to upload (or is it download, I always wonder about that) from my camera; this time is no different so lets make a start and see what we come up with!

First off the crocheted flowers that you would have seen on my previous post have now found a nice little spot to rest, and I think they look quite happy - what do you think?

I almost forgot to mention that I saw these flowers hooped up in Issue 9 of Simply Crochet!

After settling these little blooms in I hooped up some little fun pictures which would be suitable for a child's room, I think! This fabric was another craft square - 'Forest Christmas All Over' it's called - that I cut into and backed with the cotton wadding, same as for my other hoops. After completing these I then had afterthoughts about them - perhaps I could have stitched into them to outline the main character in each one, but I haven't really felt like taking them apart and starting again - yet! It is a thought for next time though!

And here are close-ups of the main little characters - the pics are not as clearly defined as I would have liked but they are cute little fellas aren't they!

A few days ago my very kind neighbour left me a big jug of sweet peas at the front door - what a lovely surprise! I do love these 'sweet' little flowers but don't really have space to put a frame up and grow my own, so I have been thoroughly enjoying my lovely gift! You can tell that my neighbour likes the same colours that I like!

Aren't they just gorgeous! And aren't I blessed!

I've been having difficulty with my teas lately: real tea is too acid for me so I either go for herbal types or else its hot water with lemon juice, but the enjoyment of my 'tea' supplies had totally left me and I'd even resorted to the odd cup of coffee, knowing that it didn't agree with me but hoping I'd got over that problem, which I haven't!!! Anyway, I have really enjoyed rose tea in the past so popped into our local shop to see if they had any - which they didn't, although they do have a great range - but, they had one I'd never come across before that looked like it might be worth a try . . . . . . .

. . . . . . . and it certainly was, and is! The blend of rose with chamomile and lavender is divine and I'm very happy to have found it, especially as it's meant to warm my heart too!!!

While in the kitchen it crossed my mind that you might be interested in having a sneak peak into my other creative area in my home so here are a couple of snaps of my shelves . . . .

Those little mice are from  a boxed set that came with three stripey balls, so they are in fact a Skittle Game but to me they're just my little mice in the kitchen - much better than real ones, I would say!!!

Now how about another wee walk around the garden while the sun is shining . . .

Another lovely rose, a climber this time, and he is Pierre de Ronsard - such a prolific bloomer but sadly with very little perfume. Then we have those gorgeous pink blooms, so fairy light, waving to us in the gentle breeze - they are called butterfly something or other! This honeysuckle was grown from the smallest cutting from our neighbour's hedge just a couple of years ago and just look at it now, and with the added bonus of that beautiful fragrance we really enjoy it!

Here we have a butterfly bush which I believe is a New Zealand plant - its foliage has an unusual smell when you touch it but oh my, look at that flower - and you're only aware of the smell if you grab hold of the foliage, so it's okay!
Then we have a lovely fuchsia hanging over the fence - I always think of ballerinas when I look at fuchsias - can you see the resemblance?

Last but certainly not least here are a couple of snaps of the LillyPilly that I've shown you before, but at a different stage here with its beautiful blossom!

And that my dear friends is it for this time - I've been busy with other little crafty things but they will wait for another time as I've probably bombarded you enough with pics for now. I do hope you've enjoyed our little sharing time and I always look forward to hearing from you and to keeping up with your posts also. As always I wish you the very best of all that is good and wonderful, and for those of you who are feeling a bit 'under the weather' or caring for a loved one who needs that extra little bit of loving, I send warm healing thoughts - and thus energies!

Warm hugs and love,

Joy xoxo

  1. What gorgeous sweet-peas from your neighbour. One of my favourite flowers too! Your garden is looking very lovely at this time of the year. You must spend hours tending it for it to look so beautiful. I have a balcony garden as I live in an apartment, but that gives me a fair amount of work in the summer months just watering and dead-heading and making sure all the plants are happy and bug free!
Those little hooped flowers are lovely! Have you made all your Christmas presents- and more? You must have a huge stock of all your embroidery and handiwork!

    1. Sandra, thank you so much for your lovely message - I agree, gardens can swallow up a lot of time but being honest I admit that it's J who does most of the work these days while I craft and blog!!! Summer time can be hard on the poor plants.
I am still making little bits and pieces towards Christmas gifts but it looks a bit like things are getting out of hand and I need to take stock now!

  4. Dear Joy
Your crocheted flowers are looking beautiful - are they for you or for a gift? The little animal hoops are really cute too. The sweet peas were a thoughtful present too - I grew some last year in a tub with an bamboo frame which were quite successful. As always, I think your garden photos are beautiful so thank you for sharing.
Have a happy and crafty week.
    Best wishes

I haven't really decided on where the flowers will go - or if they'll stay with me, for I rather like them too! Sometimes it becomes difficult to part with these things but I can always make more for myself anyway and mustn't be selfish!!!
I'll remember about the bamboo frame in a pot when it comes time for planting again Ellie, thanks for that - I bet you had a great show!

  9. Joy the hoops with the crochet blooms are so pretty...simple but really effective, I may borrow this idea for the future. The other hoop pictures with the animal theme are adorable too and I agree they would be gorgeous in no child's room, and I think they are just perfect the way they are. 2. Hello lovely Marianne - yes, those crocheted flowers are another Simply Crochet winner and so easy, I hope you give them a go. I'm so glad you like the little forest friends just as they are - I saw the fabric and knew exactly what I'd do with it. Don't be concerned about typos lovely, I make them all the time and find I really need to watch that 'spell-corrector' thing for it often makes up words that are nothing like what I tried to type!!! The latest troublesome one is its substitute for 'cuppa' - it wants to say 'culpa' which means 'neglect resulting in damage'! Silly computers!!!
Happy days to you lovely, warm hugs, Joy xo

  11. Such a wonderful post Joy filled with wonderful and beautiful goodies. I don't know where to start. I really love those pretty hoops filled with the sweet and very festive prints and I really think that they will make such a lovely addition to any child's room, so well done. I having been doing a little of the same over here, but at the moment I just feel like time is running and my post are hardly ever touching what I actually get up to, hopefully that will change. I really love the way that you have used to crocheted flowers and to be honest I think it was a really clever idea and I do hope you will be hanging those on your wall as they are gorgeous! Its always fun to have a little nosy around people's homes and thank you for sharing snippets of your kitchen with us. It is good to see someone else likes a red kettle too, it will always be my preferred colour for a kettle. You have created a lovely space and I love the shelves with pretty teacups and the sweet mice, they are adorable. How very special and thoughtful of your neighbour to bring you a pretty posy of sweet peas from her garden, you must have felt really touched by her generosity and thoughtfulness. Thank you for your the tour around the garden, you know just how much I enjoy this. I think the butterfly bush is so so pretty as is the LillyPilly, love all that pink cascading, it is beautiful. I really hope that you are enjoying the warmer weather and that you are keeping well with the lead up to Christmas. Sending you much love. 1. Ah Hannapat, what a lovely long message full of love and kindness, thank you! I understand what a busy time you are having and do hope you are pacing yourself well! The hooped crocheted flowers came from Simply Crochet, so I can't claim cleverness there - but in any case I think we all bounce ideas off each other and it's part of the charm of blogging and lovely friends like yourself! I really enjoyed your comments re my kitchen and contents Hannapat, I too enjoy having little looks into people's homes and find it helps me know them a little better. Our weather is still unsettled but I'm glad it's not hot - that will come soon enough and usually January and February are the hottest months. I have not been feeling 100% of late and have been having the occasional migraine which is rather debilitating, but overall I'm doing fine and thank you for your interest, you are a sweetie! I will be in touch soon and in the meantime do take care of yourself and have a lovely week! Much love and warm hugs, Joy xoxo

    1. Aha my friend, so lovely to have your sweet message and thank you for your kind words! The LillyPilly tree comes in a variety of sizes and types it seems, but the ones we have are smaller and can be neatly trimmed and kept in shape as bushes - there's always something going on with them - fluffy blossom at the moment, beautiful fruit (edible) at another time and then fresh growth provides the deepest of pink foliage, so they are very attractive and loveable all year round: AND they give us street privacy just for a bonus. I bet you want them even more now lovely Judy! Take care, warm hugs, Joy xo

Hello Grace and thank you for popping in again, it's always lovely to hear from you - yes, Earl Grey (and Lady Grey) used to be a favourite of mine although I haven't tried it recently; problem is it's still 'real' tea and acidy so my silly digestive system lets me down, but thank you so much for your suggestion. Open shelves are rather nice in a kitchen but do go towards more cleaning Grace - I stored nice glasses on mine for a while but became rather tired of them not looking sparkly clean all the time so changes had to be made, and so we live and learn! 27. I enjoy our bloggy friendship, Joy! I am so glad you decided to create a blog, and I look forward to visiting your posts. I am so pleased your good neighbor shared the Sweet Peas with you! When I lived in San Jose, CA, I had a neighbor who had a big trellis full of climbing Sweet Peas that were not only beautifully colorful, but also smelled heavenly~~~~ When I lived in NY we had wild Sweet Peas that came back year after year, but they had no scent, and I have never been able to grow the scented variety yet. Your hoop projects are very sweet. I have one embroidery project in a hoop. The one I showed in one of my last posts, but when I finish stitching it I am thinking I want to turn it into a pillow or display it in a rectangular frame...first I have to finish it :) I am sorry you are having to contend with an anti-tea tummy and migraines...not fun! I have tried rose tea and enjoyed it, but in general I like plain black teas best. I have to avoid dairy and gluten, but almond milk in tea and coffee sometimes helps me to digest them best. Techie folk have explained the difference between upload and download to me. For half a second I think I understand and then immediately forget...sigh :) Your LillyPilly is so pretty and unique, and I think fuchsia blossoms look like ballerinas, too. Finally, I much prefer your kitchen mice to the lively one we had who inspired us to "Eeeeeek" before it hid under our dishwasher several months ago. :)

    1. Hello Gracie, thank you so much for your very sweet and thoughtful message - I too am very happy to have this lovely blogging space and to have become your friend through it! I do wonder what makes the difference between growing scented or un-scented Sweet Peas - isn't that strange!
I sometimes find it a bit difficult to decide what to do with my finished little stitchies Grace, and as long as there aren't too many French knots or similar ones that could easily get caught up on things then usually cushions are my answer, otherwise framing is the way I go. I am really liking the little hoops for framing, and of course they can be fancied up too. Oh yes, Gracie, we don't want those type of mice - I often tease friends and tell them we've been inundated with mice in the kitchen - come and see!!! I would not have been happy to have your experience - tell me - did you catch it? Wishing you happy days and many blessings, love, Joy xo

  32. What a lovely post Joy! I only just saw it (tut, tut I need to pay more attention!) and enjoyed it so much. The flowers your neighbour left you are so pretty. I love sweet peas too and those colours are wonderful. Your crochet flowers are so pretty, I love the pink and purple ones, they are just my colours :)
The tea sounds delicious too. I love chamomile tea and drink it every day but I think it would be even more yummy with some rose and lavender flavours :)
    Hugs, Elisabeth x

    1. Thanks so much for your lovely message Elisabeth, it's really nice of you to pop in - things get a bit busy in blogland and I find myself running behind quite a bit lately so I understand, and I'm always happy to hear from you! My lovely neighbour has gifted me a second bunch of the sweet peas a couple of days ago, so I am still enjoying them, aren't I blessed! Hugs, Joy x
