Home, Garden, and Park

Here we are again, happy as can be, all good friends and jolly good company - as the song goes -  and so many times I've sung that with my grandsons when they were little and we were driving off somewhere in the car! Happy memories!

I hope you are all having a good week? I finished all those venetian blinds so am quite pleased with myself and it's so nice to see them sparkling fresh again; it was worth the effort even if I do feel a little bit jaded myself!

Anyway, I have quite a few little pics to share with you so lets go!

Recently the lovely Marianne from ladybirddiaries kindly let us have a look at her craft books and I said I would take a pic of mine also, which I've done, but really, there are very few here as over the years I bought more books on painting than 'crafts'! I think perhaps it's time to build my craft library - I mean, really, you can see that I don't have many at all, can't you!!! There are a few magazines tucked away on shelves and I suppose there are a couple of sewing books somewhere - oh yes, there is a lovely cross-stitch book I missed - The Encyclopedia of Cross Stitch Techniques by Betty Barnden - a very lovely and helpful book.

I finished the cardigan! What do you think? It's a bit different, which is what I wanted, and quite nicely shaped. I like the sleeves - they are about three quarter length. This was a free pattern from Deramores, by Rico Design and very straight-forward and easy! I mentioned before that I used Bergere de France Ecoton yarn, which is a recycled cotton blend. It knit up very nicely and is quite soft but I had to wash it on completion as it had a bit of a 'dry-cleaning fluid' sort of smell. It's okay now though, and it pressed up beautifully!

I was longing to get into some colour again after the cardi so tried out this little motif from Issue 6 of Simply Crochet. It's called Divine Diamonds by Lucy Croft and I'd had my eye on it for a while. Anyway, I didn't really intend to make anything out of this but did want to challenge myself with the pattern. It was a lot simpler than it looked! I haven't even finished off the loose ends yet!

Do you remember the pics of the local park/adventure playground that I showed you a wee while ago? Right, well, the Kangaroo Paws have developed and grown and I said I would post about them again:

Are you impressed with our Native Flora? They make quite a statement don't they!

And I've taken a couple of pics in the garden also - our lovely Jasmine first, then another gorgeous thing that I've been told is a South African plant - but have no idea of its name! I love pink!

In the front of that pic to the right is a little sprig of our Silver Birch tree foliage which has just begun to green up again after it's leaf drop of winter. Ah yes, a sure sign of Spring I'm very happy to say!

And so I'll be off, hoping you enjoyed your little visit and thank you so much for dropping by. Please leave a little message if you have time and inclination for, to me, that's what blogging's all about - interaction and communication among like-minded folks and I do enjoy it, thank you!

Have a wonderful week and take good care of yourselves!

  1. Hello lovely Joy. I am so pleased to hear that you have managed to finish cleaning those blinds, I still have the image of you dancing on that chair firmly in my head. I suspect it will never go. I really enjoy seeing what crafty books people have, so thank you for sharing this with us. The Handmade gifts, vintage style, looks like a lovely book. Now for your cardigan, it is so so beautiful and I really love the colour. Your crochet is very interesting and and I am sure if you carried on it would make a rather lovely bead cover. I have never seen kangaroo paws before, they are very impressive I have to say. Your jasmine looks wonderful and even though I am South African, I honestly can't tell from the picture what plant that is. Is it fragrant? I really enjoyed today's post lovely Joy. Wishing you a very lovely start to Spring xoxo

  2. Dear Hannapat, it's always so lovely to hear from you, and thank you for all your very thoughtful comments! Yes, I love the colour of the cardi too, it's quite a silvery grey with a bit of life in it; greys can vary so much can't they, and to me, some of them can appear quite 'dead'! I don't know about the crochet motif Hannapat, but I'll put it aside for a little while and then re-think it! I had thought that you might recognise that plant, it doesn't really have a scent! We have another of the same, but it's flower is slightly darker?
You're such a sweetheart Hannapat, thank you for being so very nice!

  3. Hi Joy I just love your photographs which are stunning to say the least, the colours just jump out at your - wonderful. I adore your cardi, I would gladly wear this style as it is chic and stylish but practical too. I am a great lover of three quarter sleeves as they are so becoming - especially for women of my age. Joy I am a real beginner at crochet and hope one day to be able to create the type of work you are doing, gorgeous. A fantastic post as always Joy - you are certainly a joy, your name really fits you. Have a wonderful weekend
    Lots of love as always

    1. Hi Dorothy, thank you for saying so many nice things and I'm very happy you enjoyed the post! This is a nice easy style cardi Dorothy - almost a jacket - and it'll be very handy for the changing weather!
Stick in at the crochet for it's so worthwhile - I've kinda lost track of time but think it's about two years now since I started with Amigurumi then branched out into different projects - we all keep forging on and learning more don't we - it's a wonderful life with so many opportunities available!
      Happy days to you Dorothy,
      Love and blessings,
      Joy xo

  4. OOh, I do love a good "show & tell" :-) That's a lovely selection of crafty books (I recognize a few but am most intrigued by the Gnome Crafs!?)
Your cardi is so pretty, I love the 3/4 sleeves as I'm always pushing mine up anyway! And I've just learned that Hannapat is a fellow South African - we're going to have to compare notes :-) I think that is a Mimosa tree, but I could be horribly wrong! Either way it's familiar so I shall see if I can look it up in one of my SA gardening books and get back to you.
    Have a happy day, Joy.
    love Gilly xx

    1. ps. just had a wee look in my book - it could be a species of Oleander. Either way, it's a pretty tree ;-) xx

    2. Lovely to hear from you again Gilly! If you look at the post entitled 'Round and round the colour wheel' you'll see a couple of little fellas from that Gnome book! Gorgeous book!
Ah yes, the lovely Hannapat is from SA too - and both of you are trying to help me identify that lovely plant - thanks so much Gilly. I didn't think about it earlier but it does get little black berries before the blooms appear, and I'm told they are poisonous! Does that help?
Wishing you lots of happies Gilly, and many thanks for your lovely message!
      Love, Joy xo

  5. oh the garden is looking so splendid, and you have been so busy with crochet! I've done nothing except chores around the house lately and when I finish I'm just too tired to do anything! Loved peeking at your bookshelf... I dont have any of those books. I just love looking at peoples houses and books and crafts, dont you?

    1. Hello, hello! and thank you for being here again! Oh don't get too busy with household chores - you've got to have craft time - can't do without craft time!!!
I do enjoy seeing other folks' books - and homes - it's just a natural interest - should have been in real estate. But I shouldn't look too closely at craft books these days for then I want them! Tut, tut!!!
Have yourself a good week won't you!

  6. Hi Joy! You sure have been a very busy lady! Cleaning blinds is a huge job in itself! I have been admiring your little collection of books. As long as I have been making things, crafts books is one thing I do not have....I don't know why I never bought any for I love them! (as a matter of fact, I keep going back and turning my head sideways to read the names even better, lol!)
Love Love your sweater. (I so need to learn how to knit!)
Your tree is a Oleander. I have a few of those myself and they are all over our town. Very pretty when in full bloom. Some are pink like yours and some bloom red flowers and white! The white are gorgeous!
    Have a wonderful week!
    Hugs, Shari

    1. So lovely to hear from you Shari - it seems like ages since the last time! I am so glad those blinds are finished - maybe I've earned another craft book for a reward?!!! The books are so nice to have, and offer much in the way of inspiration Shari - maybe you could buy yourself one on knitting for I'm sure with your talent you could easily learn to knit if you decided to!
Ah - well Gilly did say it could be a type of oleander but I thought oleander flowers were a lot bigger than these, but then, it could still be a type of, couldn't it! Thanks for that Shari!
By the way, I couldn't get into your last post - it just kept telling me the page didn't exist!!!
A lovely week to you too!
      And big hugs,

  7. Hello Joy! Leave it to you to make cleaning actually sound enjoyable and fun! I actually might do windows much the same way...your cardigan is so beautiful, I love the colour, I love my creams, ivories and pale greys! I'm going to have a look at that gnome book now! Chrissie xxx

  8. Hello Chrissie and all the best with your windows, just don't dance too wildly!!!
I like that you like my cardi, and I also love those colours - quite apart from being very attractive they are safe colours and go with most things, don't they.
The gnome book is really good, with a huge selection of little people to make - and in different types of materials too, so go for it Chrissie!
I'm going to check out your latest post now but my comments may have to wait till morning cause it's my bedtime!

  9. Joy, your sweater turned out perfectly. I love the color and the simple but beautiful design is a winner. you did a great job with it. Love those little motif's I can see a shawl being made from them. The Dangerous Paws are fascinating, so many pretty things to see today on your lovely blog.

    1. Meredith, thank you so much for your lovely compliment on my cardigan - it turned out to be such a nice pattern! A shawl would be nice in the motifs, wouldn't it - maybe I would start again with a single colour though, as I only choose to mix the colours in order to show the design more clearly! Something else for the to-do list!
I had to laugh when I read 'Dangerous Paws' then realised you were referring to the Kangaroo Paws - I thought at first you were referring to something you'd seen on one of the books! Looking close up I suppose you could actually call them dangerous though - like that plant that opens up and swallows any poor unsuspecting insects that dare come near - but no, the KPs are quite innocent!
Happy times to you lovely Meredith, and I hope work is going well for you!
      And hugs!

Do enjoy your few quieter times before the busyness starts up again Jo!

  12. Hello My Sweet Faraway Friend! First, before I say another word, I have to tell you how I'm swooning over your cardigan!!! I LOVE IT, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!!! You are quite the knitter, Joy! I love the sleeves, the length and the way they bell out a little, and the entire style of the cardi too. You do such beautiful work! Your little crocheted motifs are very pretty also. How interesting, the way they join together in the center! "Kangaroo Paws"...what a cute name for a plant. :) I can see how that name came about! All the flowers in your garden are lovely. It's so nice when everything perks up and blooms at the start of spring! Have a fun filled spring weekend sweet Joy! xoxo

    1. Ah Dear Paulette, you are so very thoughtful and kind, thank you so much! The more I look at the cardigan the more I realise what a good find that pattern was - AND for free! The shaping of the pattern is so well done - just gradual up the body (and sleeve) and then a knit row of decreases to really gather it, plus another knit row to make it a proper 'feature band'! I'm so glad you are so impressed with it!
The Kangaroo Paw - actually the 'Red and Green' KP variety - is our West Australian floral emblem, which speaks for itself really, doesn't it!
I am loving spring already - the feel and sounds are so different after winter - I SO welcome the new life and growth around us!
I wish you a wonderful weekend also lovely Paulette, and thank you so much for brightening my day!

  13. Hello Joy,
    Lovely to see your post.
I love the idea of looking through book shelves we have some books in common I spied the homemade vintage gifts I have that one and the doodle stitching.
I'm quite tempted to follow suit and do a post about books myself, I'll get the craft sale out of the way first.
Your cardigan looks wonderful I wish I could knit like that Joy. The colour yarn you've used is great to go with anything.
    The kangaroo paws are darling.
Lovely signs of spring as we are seeing the signs of autumn here.
    Changes a foot.
Enjoy the rest of your week and weekend.

    1. Hi FB, so nice to see you again, faithful as ever - I hope your week has been going well? I must have been a bit confused about dates recently for I thought your craft sale was last weekend. So I can wish you all the very best with it again - you've been a very busy girl producing such lovely goodies!
I'll look forward to your book post when you get around to it FB - it's so easy to just take a pic which speaks for itself really, and so lovely to know that friends over the high seas, such as yourself, are enjoying the same publications!
Thanks so much for your lovely comments once again FB, I always look forward to hearing from you!
I expect you and family have a nice weekend planned so make the most of it before your weather breaks!
And warm hugs to you too,

  14. Hi Joy,lovely photos, as always. I thought I had every embroidery/craft book going, but I've none of yours. I've been buying Simply Crochet too, like the colours you have chosen for the motifs. What a strange looking plant the kangaroo paws. I can see where it got its name from, you could just imagine a small animal trying to hide in there and just the paws hanging out giving it away.

    1. Hi Sarah - glad you enjoyed the post, and I did laugh at your 'take' on the kangaroo paws! You'll have to head off and catch up on your book supplies eh? I really don't have many, but the ones I do have have been extremely beneficial to me! Are you enjoying Simply Crochet? We are a couple of issues behind time over here but I've become quite used to that now - I used to download them onto my iPad, as well as having my standing order with my newsagent, but I just wait for the paper copy now!
I hope your weekend is going really well - we are having such heavy rain today it's unbelievable!
Thanks once again for dropping by and leaving a message - always so nice to hear from you!
